IRS RULES FOR CLOTHING AND HOUSEHOLD ITEMS

To be deductible, clothing and household items donated to charity after Aug. 17, 2006, must be in good used condition or better.  However, a taxpayer may claim a deduction of more than $500 for any single item, regardless of its condition, if the taxpayer includes a qualified appraisal of the item with the tax return. Household items include furniture, furnishings, electronics, appliances, and linens. Although Congress did give the IRS the power to issue regulations to deny deductions for items of Minimal Value (less than “good” condition), the onus is still on the donor as it has been to keep a written record of the itemized list of the donation and the value.  The limitation for requiring independent valuation for a single item has been dropped to $500. Any single item valued at $500.00 or more will require the independent valuation and for the donor to deduct this on his/her taxes they will be required to file IRS form 8283. In fact any donor who wants to deduct a total of $500.00 or more in Non Cash donations (this could be securities, paintings what have you) and clothing, will have to file Form 8283.  All of this information should be in publication 526.

All of our receipts do refer to pub 526 for reference to any deductions.
